Six Sigma Yellow Belt Information

The Six Sigma Yellow Belt, in addition to Black, Green, and White Belts, make up four essential elements of this type of quality improvement team. Understanding the methods used and how to improve the company overall is exactly what a prospective Yellow Belt candidate will learn in Six Sigma Training.
Six Sigma professionals work with a color coded ‘belt’ hierarchy system that allows team members to understand what they are responsible for. The top level is a Black Belt, much the same as in martial arts. There is also a Master Black Belt who holds the highest level of Six Sigma Training and is responsible for training and mentoring the other color levels. The Green Belt is next in line after the black, followed by the Yellow Belt and, finally, the White Belt rounds off the list at the lowest level of training and experience.
Those professionals who hold a white belt, at the bottom of the rung, are responsible only for locally oriented tasks, such as allocating resources and running as a go-between for the organization and local society. They will help solve problems on a local basis and although they are aware of the policies and procedures, they are not always considered a true Six Sigma professional by the community as a whole, and their existence or necessity within a company is sometimes questioned.
The next level up when it comes to training, knowledge, and experience, would be a Yellow Belt. Someone with this color Six Sigma Certification will be responsible for carrying out all of the tasks assigned to them by their superior belt colors. The green and black belts will depend on these qualified team members to perform tasks using the DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, and control) and DMADV (define, measure, analyze, design, and verify) models. They have no authority to lead but will have the knowledge and skills the leaders need to successfully perform whatever is needed from them for the project to be successful as a whole. They are essential to the success of a Six Sigma Project team, and are indispensable to the company as a whole.
The next level of certification includes the Green Belts, who will work either independently as a team leader working on their own small projects or as an assistant to the black belt leaders on large scale projects. They are a group of professionals who will help to collect data, analyze it, and gather results. They will make decisions based on the level of their authority for that particular project. They will use proven and well-researched statistical results to suggest possible changes and improvements to the way the organization is run, in the form of changes to its policies and procedures for the better.
At the top, the black belts, who are considered to be the project leaders, will have the most experience and the most knowledge as far as the Six Sigma Methodology goes. They will lead groups on projects delegating and ensuring that all necessary tasks are completed efficiently and on time. They will also help green belts run their own small teams and projects by acting as mentors. They are responsible for the majority of work that will be done. They will make the decisions on who works on what and when. They will set deadlines and goals, and will work with the team members to meet deadlines and work to eliminate sources of defects, rework, and quality errors in a business’ processes, therefore reaching the goals of creating quality products for more profits.
The Master Black belts are people who know how to work with others and train while on the job. They will remain consultants or mentors for the Black Belts as they work to get the projects done within the company, to help clear up any problems and to answer questions that might arise along the way.
