Six Sigma Methodology Is a Quality Control System That Has Proven Itself Over Decades
Since inception in the 1980s by the Motorola Company, the concept called Six Sigma Methodology has been effectively used by various large and small businesses to great effect. The fundamental principle is to eradicate errors and defects in manufacturing and supply chains and to ensure quality customer service and products/services. The concept of improving each and every stage of a production process and ensuring that the entire staff works together to reach these goals makes this system a winner every time. It is essential that the entire exercise must be management driven and company-wide.
The Six Sigma system allows for staff throughout the business to be classified into levels according to training and experience. These individuals then form teams and work together to drive results. The hierarchy of training levels includes Master Black Belts, Black Belts, Green Belts, and Yellow Belts from highest level of training to lowest. . By introducing quality management methods company wide, it creates a core group of people within an industry who are experts in their career fields. This process includes a sequence of steps toward an ultimate goal that is measurable and is expected to be achieved through a rigorous statistical process. Various smaller goals are also worked toward throughout including; reduction of cycle time, lessening of pollution, reducing costs, improving profit margins and ensuring customer satisfaction.
A concerted effort of this nature is one that may prove to be highly beneficial to all concerned within a company, business or organization. Any business owner who adopts this quality control process and is 100% committed to its success may find their company experiencing a turnaround of phenomenal levels and increasing profits all the while. The continual statistical measuring, controlling and analyzing of each and every process throughout every Six Sigma Project have the propensity to lead to improvement.
It is essential that clear definite and measurable goals must be established before any changes take place within a company. All decisions need to be made using concrete and verifiable data to enhance the success of this effort. Achievable and realistic goals need to be set and monitored on a regular basis by Six Sigma Professionals in leadership roles.
Each goal or target set will require its own evaluation and measurement parameters. No two processes are 100% alike and even small variances can make a difference in desired results. As these processes have improved and evolved over the years, various new innovative features can begin to be added.
This system relies on each and every member of a company’s team striving for perfection at every turn. Six Sigma Methodology encourages both the improvement of existing processes, and investigating the creation of new processes or product models. These are considered important factors when compiling current and future plans for any successful businesses’ products or services.
When a company invests in the Six Sigma Program, they have the assurance that their manufactured products and services are 99.99% defect free. All in all, this process demands a total commitment by everyone involved from the very bottom to the very top, in money, time, and brain power. Six Sigma Training for employees is an initial investment that will prove its worth over time as long as everyone involved makes the commitment necessary.
With this in mind the, DMAIC project method was devised. Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control are the buzz words for the Six Sigma Methodology. Further stages such as Recognize and Verify are often added to the mix. Every one of these stages is set in place within a Six Sigma Company to encourage employees at every level to reach their full potential whilst the company develops a work ethic of excellence and is recognized for its quality goods and top notch service; ultimately resulting in continued company-wide success over many decades.
