The Best Methods of Business Leadership

Business Leadership means different things for different people. For some people, their image is that of an army general, marshaling people and taking charge. Others see themselves as more nurturing, looking to make sure that everyone is satisfied in their roles at work. It can be difficult at first, but with the right approach, you can inspire the best possible productivity from your work colleagues.

Whatever your method of managing, with business, the first thing to be aware of is that your actions will be equally as important as your words, if not more so. It is not enough to simply state that you want to be more efficient or your customers should be more satisfied. You should set clear goals and define exactly how you intend to do this.  This is so that your team will be completely on board with your intentions for the company.

A good leader has the ability to make other people want to follow their example. While delegation is important, you need to make sure that you are doing your job well and offering a positive contribution to the running of a company. This does not mean doing work that other people can do, but making sure you do your fair share to the best of your ability.  In other words, sometimes it is important to ‘get down in the trenches’ so to speak with your team and work with them to enhance the feeling of camaraderie in the workplace.

There are various ways of achieving this. The first challenge is when you first take a supervisory or management role. Some companies deliberately transfer people when they reach a management role in order to avoid people not respecting the management because they knew them when they were making everyone coffee. However, sometimes this is not possible or practical.  Being open minded is a good way to approach making major decisions or managing work colleagues. While the logical approach is to go with the way that has worked before, this approach may not always be appropriate. At the very least, you should be prepared to listen to suggestions and feedback, even if you do not agree with it.  A good leader is someone who can always be reached and approached by his or her team of employees.

If you achieve good results with the goals you have set, and you are happy with the work that your colleagues have completed, then you should give them praise and acknowledgement. Be aware that words are not always enough. If you have reached a sales target and you genuinely think that your colleagues have been a part of that achievement, then the reward should reflect that.  Each individual employee will be motivated by different things, so be sure to rotate the rewards.  Maybe you give the employees a late morning or an early dismissal.  Maybe you can order everyone lunch, or give a small gift as a token of the company’s appreciation for their hard work, as well as your pride in them as a leader.

Promotions and raises should be given out on merit. Giving people rewards does not always have to be in the form of a promotion or a raise. A corporate party or a nice lunch can be equally rewarding if organized in the right way. It is also often a great way of focusing people, giving them a target to aim for if they achieve the sales or get the work done that you need from them.

Business Leadership is not a skill that can be instantly picked up or achieved purely through working for long enough or hard enough. Attending seminars, reading books, and reading profiles of successful entrepreneurs are all effective ways of improving your leadership skills and can help you create a more successful, driven, and most importantly, happy workforce.
