Creating a Culture for Quality Improvement

Implementing quality improvement across an organization can be difficult.  It is important that you are not pushy about improvements.  If there are barriers that are making things difficult then they need to be eliminated.  This means that if as part of your quality plan you installed a new software program that is supposed to make productivity increase and reduce the time it takes to run jobs significantly, then you need to ensure everyone is properly trained.  A barrier might be the learning curve of the new software, and it may be a difficult software to learn. Invest in removing barriers if you must.  This will help encourage and motivate staff to be on board with the changes taking place.

If the culture of your organization is currently sluggish then you cannot expect people to aggressively jump on board with a new quality improvement program.  It will take time and you need to be patient.  Being too aggressive will only create instability with issues.  Make the system responsive to the improvement plan and be patient.

It is very important when implementing a quality improvement plan in a business that there are the right people in place to provide mentoring and coaching.  These people need to be leaders, and must know how to not force change, but show employees how the change will benefit them in their positions and their career goals.  Leaders will mentor employees and provide assistance when necessary.  They will also work to ensure the changes are taking place and working as they should.

Quality improvement needs to have a vision of where it is leading an organization.  Implementing this type of change within a company requires you to maintain the vision and never change your stance.  Leaders need to be on board entirely and show the employees why the improvement plan is going to better the company and everyone involved.

Creating a culture for quality improvement can be difficult if people are used to a laid back environment and a lack of productivity.  In order to implement improvements that will increase production and efficiency, it is important to change the attitudes of the employees.  Employees need to want the improvements or they will not happen.
