Three Tips for Success with DFSS
- 7-12-2009
- Categorized in: DFSS (Design for Six Sigma)
Design for Six Sigma is not like the other Six Sigma Tools or methods. It is not going to replace or fix anything, but is instead going to be used as a framework on the ground level to create a new process that follows the Six Sigma standard. This means that whatever process is created with DFSS as should ideally have a defect ratio of 3.4 parts per million, or PPM. Whether this is a situation where there is a redesign happening, or is a completely new process that is being created, DFSS can be a very effective solution. The great thing about this process is that it has a heavy reliance on the Voice of the Customer (VOC), which largely determines the process and the end result. Here are three tips when working with DFSS.
1. Forget the standard process. Forget traditional Six Sigma, DMAIC, and everything else. None of this is going to be relevant because you are not improving, you are re-creating or creating. Once you focus on DFSS and its principles alone, you will have better results with your Six Sigma Projects every time.
2. Train properly. Management should always be trained first, and then employees or lower-level team members. Once the management has been trained, a plan can be put in place that can be implemented on a project basis, allowing for changes to be made as needed.
3. Don’t forget change management. Even when you are designing or redesigning something, rather than using a traditional Six Sigma Process to make improvements, some people will balk at the changes or the different way of doing things. Focus on top-level objectives, and getting everyone to believe in the capabilities of your DFSS projects.
When this particular methodology is not determined to the best of its ability, it is hard to make things happen. Therefore, you need to keep these tips in mind. When it comes to all of your Design for Six Sigma Projects, you should always be willing and able to do whatever it takes to get the best results every time. These things will help you to achieve those results, but there is also much more to learn about DFSS that can help.
Don't start at the top. While having higher objectives is essential, you need to start with smaller projects to see if this method will work for your business or not. If you attempt to start up and work your way down, you could easily destroy your entire business with one wrong move, no matter how much you know about Design for Six Sigma.
