The Importance of Six Sigma Yellow Belts

Six Sigma is a business strategy developed by Motorola in 1986 to enable the manufacturing segment of a company to produce high quality output based on specific guidelines. It was developed by the company’s top executives because of the poor manufacturing techniques the business engaged in.

A group of employees assigned to the Six Sigma Yellow Belt level of certification are responsible for assisting the other belts in problem solving and implementation of businesses guidelines.

This program emphasizes that business processes including manufacturing can be analyzed and measured to achieve greater success for an organization. In fact, a business cannot be successful without implementing such a strategic program in place. There are three main color belts, or levels of certification and expertise, in this type of quality improvement process. These are black, green and yellow belts. The highest group is the black belt followed by the employees of green color belts.

The candidates are also expected to search for ways to improve a company's efficiency. The green and black belt employees of a company rely on Yellow Belts. They do not have a leadership role, nor do they lead projects; however, they are integral to the system working as a whole.

Yellow Belt Six Sigma Training teaches the candidate about the program system as a whole but does not train on running an organization. A yellow belt employee has to be trained fully in handling problems of the organization. They do research, are aware of the company's strengths and weaknesses and have an idea where the company is heading.  After being assigned projects by the green and black belt employees, they investigate and search for solutions depending on the task given.

A yellow belt training course outlines the management process and tools to be used to facilitate a company's overall objectives. Upon successful completion of the training, an employee earns a certificate. After undergoing the training, the prospective employees are able to scout for profit earning segments of a business. They are very important to a business as they are the future of the businesses performance.

Usually, the candidates who have advanced to green and black blets have acquired a lot of skills and experiences that can be used to benefit the organization. Some small to medium sized companies combine the yellow and green professionals within their six sigma structure in order to save time and training costs.

Even though a six sigma structure has different employees with different levels of expertise, each employee in a company is important in contributing to the progress of the business. Six sigma structures are widely used and accepted by most fortune 500 companies as an essential component of a successful business.
