Lean Six Sigma 101: The Basics

Lean Six Sigma Training and Certification is designed to teach candidates how to reduce waste and defects that bog down the core processes within their company or business. Candidates are trained to spot and to eliminate problems in the core process that may hinder production and hamper quality.

The ultimate goal of Lean Six Sigma Training is simply to increase customer loyalty by delivering the perfect product. Lean Six Sigma Training teaches individuals how to focus on their company’s shortcomings within the Six Sigma culture framework, thereby increasing speed and efficiency in the process. Data is also collected on the flow and delays within each activity of the overall process, and particular attention is paid to the separation of value added processes vs. non value added processes. The goal is to eliminate all non value added processes within the company.

Lean Six Sigma teaches that there are basic types of waste generated by a core process, regardless of the type industry. These include:
•    The Negative Human Factor
•    Defects or Rework
•    Inventory - Things waiting to be worked into the process
•    Overproduction - Items produced too early or in too big quantities
•    Waiting Time - Employees standing around waiting to complete their tasks
•    Useless Motion - Needlessly transporting people, products, or waste.

Lean Six Sigma also designs ways to count and then eliminate the cost of needless complexity. Basically, this means simplifying the core process down to the base elements.

Six Sigma Training shows how 50% of wasted business time is eaten up by re-work to placate customers. By using Lean Six Sigma, workers are able to spot the problem situations literally before they occur. At the very least, the problems are spotted before the situation turns ugly and you are completely unable to repair it. Catching problems this early in the process actually speeds up the production process, which is the desired intention of Lean Six Sigma. Workers are taught through Lean Six Sigma to recognize the need for balance in the process, which ultimately improves service. Training can be completed either online from a reputable training provider or on-site.  Alternatively, outside Lean Six Sigma consultants can be hired to complete the process. Candidates who successfully complete Training, are tested to validate their new skill set, and are then awarded their Lean Six Sigma Certification.
