Launching a Career With Six Sigma Training

There is a special infrastructure of people within the organization who are experts in these methods.  They include Master Black Belt, Black Belt and Green Belt.  Each title has its own level of Six Sigma training and Six Sigma certification.  Each Six Sigma project has one or more persons in each of the identified titles within the infrastructure who will follow a defined sequence of steps to implement each project within the company.

A Six Sigma Master Black Belt is identified by a Champion.  (The Champion is a person from upper management within the company who is responsible for Six Sigma implementation across the organization in an integrated manner.  They also act as mentors to Master Black Belts.)  He or she has completed the Six Sigma Black Belt training and has received Six Sigma certification for that title.  The Master Black Belts act as in-house coaches for the Six Sigma projects.  Their time is spent exclusively on Six Sigma.  They interact with champions while guiding Black Belts.  There are no universal standards which set the Master Black Belt apart from other Black Belts but he or she must demonstrate a higher degree of problem solving.  Six Sigma Black Belts are always a self-starters and self-motivators who are ever ready to take on increased challenges and attain higher goals.  Their skill and the knowledge of the tools along with their zeal and drive to attain quality in a company’s product are what make them such an asset.  Their tasks include statistics as well as ensuring consistent application of Six Sigma across various functions and the departments that use them.  Their skill level must include all facets of their subordinate staff, including Six Sigma Black Belts and Six Sigma Green Belts.

The Six Sigma Black Belt is chosen by the Master Black Belt.  During Six Sigma Black Belt training, a candidate will learn about the Six Sigma philosophy of process improvement; study customer centered business; learn about lean principles; master advanced statistics; gain insight on successfully coaching project teams; discuss and understand group/organizational assessment.  The Six Sigma Black Belt training must be complete and the Six Sigma certification for the title must be granted.  The Black Belt will select project team members to work under their direct lead, providing them with Six Sigma training, leadership, support, and direction, as needed, using their knowledge and understanding of Six Sigma tools.  Lastly, they will interact with his Master Black Belt and Champion, acting as in internal consultant while providing feedback on the project and developing Six Sigma deployment strategies.

The Green Belt(s) are picked by the Black Belt for the Six Sigma team.  The 6 Sigma training for a Green Belt includes learning how to apply statistical methods for business process improvements.  These improvements could be in communicating a business strategy across the organization; integrating with Lean Manufacturing, TOC and other improvement methods; applying the DMAIC improvement process; selecting the right statistical tools for the process being worked on; and significantly increasing profitability through Six Sigma projects.  Six Sigma Green Belt certification can be achieved with the completion of the corresponding Six Sigma coursework.
