If you are considering a career as a Six Sigma professional, you need to read this article.  You will find out all you need to know to enter into and be successful in this lucrative career.

Six Sigma Jobs

The demand for Six Sigma professionals has increased in recent times with many organizations becoming aware of the benefits that can be derived from implementing Six Sigma methodologies. The advancements made in Six Sigma have resulted in the development of new concepts that are applicable to services as well as governmental organizations, creating the need for Six Sigma professionals in such organizations. In addition to large organizations, a large number of small organizations have also started undertaking Six Sigma projects. These organizations hire Six Sigma professionals as consultants or permanent employees.

Training vs. Recruitment

Six Sigma jobs are available in numerous industries both at junior and senior levels with varying job descriptions and requirements that are unique to each organization. Many organizations believe in training existing employees in Six Sigma concepts and methodologies, as they are already familiar with the organization’s work processes. However, some organizations also look at external options when hiring Six Sigma professionals for full-scale implementation throughout the organization.

Certifications

Six Sigma job titles vary depending on organizational requirements and may include terms such as "Six Sigma Analyst", "Six Sigma Black Belt" or "Six Sigma Consultant". These titles may also include terms such as "Senior Project Manager", "Director of Operational Excellence", "Functional Project Lead", "Lead Analyst/Project Manager", "Six Sigma Program Manager", "Business Process Manager", or "Senior Projects Manager". All these titles refer more or less to the skills of a Six Sigma professional who has been certified as Black Belt. Professionals who fit into such roles are expected to have requisite training in Six Sigma methodologies and experience in handling cross-functional process improvement teams.

Finding Experts

Advertisements for senior level Six Sigma jobs refer to individuals who have been certified as Master Black Belts. These professionals are trained in the various methodologies of Six Sigma and act as an organization-wide Six Sigma program manager. They are actively involved in implementing Six Sigma concepts in business processes, overseeing process improvement projects and providing guidance to Black Belts as and when required. This position probably demands the highest level of Six Sigma experience and qualifications.

Ideally, organizations prefer people who are certified as Six Sigma Black Belts. The certification means that the individual has received training from competent Six Sigma consultants who have relevant exposure to training and implementation of Six Sigma, especially in Six Sigma DMAIC and/or DFSS methodology. Experience is essential for qualifying for such jobs as most organizations do not always insist but strongly prefer candidates who have completed at least one Six Sigma project.

Hiring Criteria

In addition to qualifications and project experience, many organizations prefer hiring professionals who have experience in a similar type of industry. For instance, manufacturing companies will prefer a person who has direct experience in a manufacturing environment. Anyone with management experience will have additional advantage, as this is one key criteria for a Six Sigma project team leader. Organizations are often in need of incumbents who can lead and facilitate Black Belts, Green Belts, and business teams throughout Six Sigma projects. In order to be competent in such roles, it is important to have a deep understanding of business processes and quality methodologies in the specific domain, apart from the willingness to take initiatives. It is also important to possess creative skills that are necessary for conceptualizing strategic business issues and developing practical solutions.
